We let our minds wonder about what lies on the other side of our questions, but how often do we let our minds wonder toward what lies on the other side of the window across the room? How often do we give attention to the depths of the clouds, taking up glorious space in the sky, over the clouds of worry and doubt that take up space within our minds? What’s on the inside is what truly matters, but this outside world has many lessons to teach us, too. There are many layers here. Layers you have been invited to dig deep into. Even when it comes to the things you see everyday. It is always worth it to take a closer look.
In the same way a child can abruptly stop walking to pause and notice an airplane flying above them, or an interesting rock beneath their feet, we can pause and be in awe of this world in the same way. We can let ourselves be interrupted by the beauty of what seems like an ordinary, everyday life. It is a childish thing to do, and I mean that in the very best way possible.
We come into this world curious and open to the world around us. We come ready to explore and learn with the senses that are available to us. But as we get older, the millions of little miracles we used to discover on a daily basis become nothing more than background noise as we make room for the more “important” grown up things in life.
I hope you can let this strange and beautiful world and all of its lessons interrupt your life in the most beautiful, grace-filled way. I hope amidst all of your unanswered questions and prayers, you can still find the time to the learn the song the bird is singing outside of your window and the hour and minute the sun sets this time of year. I hope when you taste the tangerine, the clementine, the grapefruit, you can taste that this, right here, is in season. It is rich, it is ripe, and this is life. And it may not change everything or make it all right, but it can remind you that amidst your fears of scarcity, waking up with your senses in-tune to the world around you is still a daily possibility, that alone is a miracle. And even though you cannot see or experience it all at once, you can taste that you’re a part of it.
It is far too easy to feel disconnected with this world, and as a result, disconnected with life. When it comes to technology alone, we are constantly bombarded with digital renderings of a world that we are not a part of . We are pulled into a thousand different places all around the world while simultaneously being pulled away from the world right in front of us. And even though you are reading this very message on a technological device of some sort, I hope that these words spark a childlike curiosity to continue to go hunting for the beauty in everyday life beyond the screen. I hope that you find the richness of the un-rushed life that is calling you by name everyday, leaving you with the hope that there is so much more to learn here.
More tomorrow…
Sincerely,
