It is time to clear the branches. It is time to clear the branches along the path that keep you from moving forward. Whatever feelings, thoughts, or opinions have left you feeling stuck, it is time to identify them. Call them out by name. Say it out loud:
I am not inadequate.
I am not the wrong size.
I am not too young to be wise.
I am not too old to have value.
I am not too broken to know love.
I am not ugly.
I am not incompetent.
I am not the worst thing that has ever happened to me.
I am not the worst thing that was ever said to me.
I am not my past.
Branch by branch, begin to clear them out. It’s okay if there are many branches. It’s okay if it takes time to clear the path. It took years to get this way. It will take time to clear it out. But it is worth it. It is absolutely worth it. The more you clear the path, the more sunlight you’re letting through. The more you will begin to see that no matter what made the path difficult to travel, the path was still beneath your feet.
It is a lifelong journey to work through the things that hold you back. As long as you are alive, you will have to continue to clear the path. So do not be discouraged if you suddenly find new branches hanging a little lower than they are supposed to, snagging at your clothing, poking at your skin. You might be inclined to think, “but, I have already dealt with this…” and it’s true, you have, and that is why you have the strength and knowledge to clear these branches once again.
And I hope with time, you only get better at this. I hope you begin to see those things that used to hold you back as mere distractions...nothing more than branches you need to clear, to keep carrying on the path in the way you were meant to. I hope you remember that this journey called life is what you were made for. You were made to keep traveling in pursuit of all that is still in store.
So keep traveling. Keep reminding yourself of who you are, and also, who you are not. Keep reminding yourself that the lies you used to believe do not get the privilege to tell your story. Keep reminding yourself of the Light-woven Truth that runs through the wild of your deepest fears, reminding you that you are not alone out here. It may not feel like much, but in doing this, you are slowly beginning to clear those branches. You are beginning to make room to travel the path just a little bit further, without the things that have held you back.
More tomorrow…
Sincerely,
Morgan Harper Nichols
