Remember: it takes time to work through the tangles of the past. The ability to start over doesn’t happen in one big swoosh. A lot has to be unlearned. A lot of healing has to take place. So you can’t be so hard on yourself when those old thoughts rise up. That doesn’t mean that all of a sudden, you have been set back. That doesn’t mean you’re not growing. You are still coming forth into who you were meant to be even when you feel stuck untangling things from the past.
Having a flashback doesn’t mean you’re set back. Having a tough day on a difficult anniversary doesn’t make your weak for not “getting over it” yet. This is all a part of being human. These are the ebbs and flows of this grand ocean called life, and all you can do is take it one wave at a time. All you can do is trust that you are still headed to shore. You are still headed home. Even though the amount of waves seem endless and unknown.
And you are going to be okay. Yes, you have to wrestle with a lot of emotions, over things that weren’t even your fault, but those things do not have to keep you from being okay. You can still smile here. You can still be whole here. You can even have a fresh start. You are worthy of that. My dear, you are worthy of that. And those shadows of the past do not have the power to take that away from you.
More tomorrow...
Sincerely,
Morgan Harper Nichols
